Probabilistic graphical models encode statistical relations between random variables by structurally encoding them on a graph. In recent years, graphical models have attracted attention in a variety of fields including communication theory, bioinformatics, combinatorial optimization, and machine learning, to name just a few. In this talk, we overview properties of probabilistic graphical models, discuss message passing algorithms for solving problems represented by these models, and present some recent applications to communications including distributed routing and resource allocation.
